At the last council meeting, many citizens and neighbors spoke out in opposition of a request to rezone 14.77 acres along route 17 near Hog Heaven. A Petition was presented containing the signatures of more than 1,000 residents requesting council to deny the request. The majority of those signatures were from residents of District 6 and District 2.
The property lies in Council District 2 which is represented by Bob Anderson who requested other council members to please follow his lead and deny the rezoning to increase density.
The vote was as follows:
Chairman Louis Morant recused himself due to a potential conflict of interest.
Raymond Newton of Andrews (District 5) made a motion to approve the rezoning.
The motion to approve was seconded by Steve Goggans of Pawleys Island (District 6).
Three council members voted in favor: Raymond Newton, Steve Goggans and Lillie Jean Johnson of Georgetown (District 4).
Two council members opposed: Bob Anderson (District 2) and John Thomas (District 1), both of Pawleys Island.
One council member abstained: Everett Carolina of Georgetown (District 3).
The effect of this vote has not yet been officially determined.
It is a complex legal issue that does not lend itself to an easy or quick answer. It will require research by our new county attorney to determine which rules apply and the effect of application of those rules. As soon as we know of the final interpretation, we will let you know. In the meantime, we will stay the course.
As always, thank you for your continued support!
